Mathematics
At Bell Primary we accept the premise that new technology has
created the need for fresh directions and thinking in maths. While
the understanding of maths principles and proficiency in the basic
skills is viewed as a vital concern, we recognise that it is equally
important that children be helped to:
·
think for themselves
·
use initiative
·
exercise good judgement
·
develop confidence in the handling of new materials and
technological systems.
Hence some important features of the program include:
·
a one-hour numeracy block each day
·
a strong foundation of maths principles and computational skills,
through work in number, measurement, quantitative and logical
relationships
·
investigative learning - centred around problem solving and applying
maths to familiar and everyday situations
·
the provision of materials and stimulating situations that will
challenge and actively include children
·
a large degree of interaction through co-operative learning among
students
·
access to computers is an integral part of the maths program.
In short, we aim to provide a comprehensive and consistent program
from Prep to Year 6, designed to give all students the highest level
of skill and confidence, enabling them to participate effectively in
an ever-increasing technological society. |
